SRAM RED 22

SRAM videos on how to bleed their disc brakes and a second one showing how to bleed the hydraulic rim brakes: is this just being helpful or a sign that SRAM are worried about us conservative roadies?

Of course using a 10-speed Red groupset at the Giro d’Italia did not stop Mark Cavendish winning 5 stages and for the amateur the release of yet another 11-speed groupset may simply signal a great time to search out bargain 10-speed Red groupsets as dealers clear stock to make way for 22. Plus we have to ask since when is braking such a big issue for racing cyclists? Never has having better brakes meant winning more races, quite the opposite in fact. Where better braking does score is when descending mountains and so sits much better with the sportive rider. This group now spend a lot on their bikes and very much represents the ‘boom’ in the booming road market.

Our main issue with 11-speed though, which is true of all makes, is of course wheels. Just think about how many sets of wheels you have? How many are 11-speed ready? Ignoring wheels we have on test, us old timers still have an average of five pairs of wheels per person here. Of those, only the Mavic hubbed wheels can readily accept 11-speed without modification. Anything else and you are looking at buying new cassette bodies as a minimum; realistically many riders will be forced to buy new wheels when choosing 11-speed. Make the change to disc brakes and you will definitely need new wheels; keeping up with the Jones’ could get very costly…

Of course, SRAM think of everything and have already foreseen that possible demand and recently launched the Zipp 303 disc brake wheels. Over to you now UCI…
