Remerx Alcyon Wheels Review

realise that, in a world of weight obsessives, I may be alone. Perhaps there’ll be a white anodized option in the future..?

Remerx wheels come from the Czech Republic and are imported into the UK by a Slovakian called Milan Sihelsky. He rode as a pro on the continent and then rode for Kuota-Spinergy-GSG cycling team here in the UK. His company, Sihel Cycling, is based in Lancashire. Remerx offer a range of clincher, tubeless and tubular wheels for mtbing, BMX, cyclo-cross and road racing. At the top of the road range sit two very nice, very light, carbon wheelsets which seem to have a very good pedigree in Czech racing. The Remerx Alcyon wheels fall in the middle of the range and are described as suitable for racing and training.

Aside from the colours the most noticeable thing about these wheels is the aluminium spokes which, on the red and black wheels, look similar to those of a Mavic Ksyrium if a little chunkier; on the white wheels they look a lot chunkier than they actually are – that paint again – but on the red and blacks you get an idea of their true nature. In direct comparison to Mavic’s these spokes are not as flattened, so basically are not as wide, but are fatter so the amount of material used is probably similar.

This may have benefits in cross winds as Mavic’s Ksyrium wheels with their relatively high number of flat bladed spokes, really can catch you out in strong side winds. The shape of the Remerx spokes seems to offer a good balance between all round aerodynamics and strength.

And it is in the strength of the aluminium spokes for which Remerx claim significant advantages over the more traditional steel versions. There would appear to be no weight advantage though, as the claimed weight for a steel spoked Alcyon wheelset is 1490g, whereas aluminium spoked Alcyon wheels are 1565g. As mentioned above we measured ours to 1557g for our red and blacks, and 1596g for the white pair, so the claimed weights are accurate.
