But Remerx claim that the aluminium spokes, through both the spoke thickness and their wider seating area, allows them to create a much stronger wheel. They use 20 spokes up front and 24 spokes in the rear and the spokes are anything but tightly strung which lead us to believe we were going to be riding a ‘comfort’ wheel.

This perception was further enhanced by the fact that these spokes have an obvious bend in them at the end closest to the rim which we thought must create some flex and aid the ride comfort.

However, when you get down to business and ride hard on these wheels, they are actually very stiff and its obvious that Remerx have indeed produced a very strong wheel even with the bend in the spokes. During the test I tried my damnedest to get some brake rub from the rear but could not induce any. Again given the lack of spoke tension and apparent lack of lateral rigidity when stationary – its easy to move the rim to touch the brake blocks – this is not what we had expected.

As with the spokes the hubs and cassette body are also aluminium, and as is fairly standard the front hub uses two sealed bearings, whilst the rear hub has three, two sitting under the cassette and a further bearing on the non-drive side. They are very smooth.
