Fulcrum Racing Quattro Wheels

be hailed as a modern interpretation of the traditional Campagnolo hub, though is nowhere near as attractive.

There was a time when alloy deeper sectioned rims were more common. As well as Campagnolo’s famous Shamal wheel, Mavic produced the CXP30 and then the more refined CXP33 prior to launching the Ksyrium wheels, but this trend soon gave way and nowadays, for the most part, deep section rims are made of carbon; not only do you get aerodynamic benefits but there is also, with this once exotic material, the promise of both great strength and the all important lightweight.

And that’s the first thing that strikes you about the Fulcrum Racing Quattro. They are not light by modern standards. The claimed weight is 1725g. We, however, using the CycleTechReview.com scales of truth got 1811g for our pair; the rear 999g and the front 812g, plus 59g and 55g for the respective skewers. So you are not going to buy these wheels because you want a pair of lightweight mountain wheels…and on weight alone the choice of a deep aluminium rim on the Racing Quattros, though admittedly mid-range wheels, seems a strange one.

But then the second thing that gets your attention straight away with the Racing Quattros is the quality. Everything about these wheels mimics more expensive offerings. The superb finish to the rim side walls; the thin, highly tensioned, few

and far between spokes; the smoothness of the bearings as you spin them in mid-air; the quality of the skewers…You can tell this is a product that has been made with care and precision. So much so, I had to double check the price which at £299 list price represents excellent value. Looking online you can easily get them for £225, which for such quality then becomes a steal, despite the weight.

The technology is also fairly impressive, even more so as each technology has its own special name. Whereas the CX
