it was a heavy wheel but held the promise of improved aerodynamics, even if modern research and rim profiles would suggest that this may have been less effective than we thought at the time. I was chasing the dream of the light weight, stiff wheel and had some tubulars built by a reputable builder, but these rims were so light that the rear wheel would need truing after every couple of races; despite the relatively high spoke count, they lacked the stiffness in a rear wheel I really needed. As I was regularly reminded, the Shamal was stiff and reliable, despite having far fewer spokes.
And the Fulcrum Racing Quattro feels like a descendent of those early Shamals. Its almost as deep – the Shamal was over 40mm and the Quattro is 35mm deep – but its more modern rim shape suggests better aerodynamics.
