Shimano RS80 Wheels

If you have the best of everything on your race bike and realise the importance of wheels on performance, you might not usually spec ‘Ultegra’ wheels. However, in our opinion these wheels are so good that you may have to reconsider that prejudice.

Is it really worth spending more when for well south of £400 (if you shop around you can get them for just over £330) you can have a wheel that weighs the same but importantly is lighter at the rim and stiffer than many more costly wheels?

There are ‘better’ wheels out there but as a general, utility, do-it-all wheel, especially when factoring the cost, this has to be at the top of the list.

Would I spend my hard earned cash on these wheels? Hell yes. For the money they are spot on.

You know the worst thing about these wheels though? For about 3 years now various team-mates have been singing the praises of this particular Shimano wheelset and I never listened to them.

After having said all that and asking myself would I buy these RS80 wheels or, bike snob that I am, fork out a bit extra for the Dura Ace versions? Well, I am loathe to admit it, but having raced and ridden these wheels without incident, this might be the first time I don’t go Dura-Ace…
