Shimano RS80 Wheels

So needing a new go to wheelset, I posed this question to Editor-cum-tech-guru, Hallett. He asked me what I thought I needed in this do it all wheelset.

So if you were putting a set of wheels through constant cycle racing and training hell, what would be the requirements from a do it all wheelset?

Well firstly they have to have to be clinchers so punctures can be easily dealt with at the roadside, not that that is as much of an issue nowadays with modern tyres, but is still essential just in case.

Secondly they must have an alloy braking surface for braking reliability, especially if the terrain is hot and mountainous, as carbon clinchers still have issues with descending and heat build up.

Thirdly, they must be light, though not too light as to be unreliable.

They must then combine this with lateral stiffness to handle sprints…

…and be reasonably easily repaired.

Also this wheelset should not too expensive, so in the real world we can

all justify them to our other halves or bank manager or who ever it is you currently report into.

Finally they should look good. Not flash, just good on the bike.

So in line with CycleTechReview.com’s look at mid-priced wheels, Richard handed me the Shimano RS80 wheelset with a knowing smile, “Try these”.
