Speedplay Zero Stainless Pedal

Stainless Steel

The exact pedals in question are the Speedplay Zero Stainless, so called as they sport a stainless steel axle. Looking at the Speedplay range, they appear to be the most practical choice as stainless steel is associated with longevity, stiffness and, whilst not as lightweight as their titanium siblings, they are light enough to appeal to most racers this side of weight weenie. Out of the box comes the Speedplay Zero Stainless

Weight

That weight is a claimed 103g per pedal for the stainless steel version; on my scales the Zero’s weighed in virtually bang on at 104g. The cleats weigh in at scant 70g per pair which would be it if you are using a Speedplay specific sole on your shoe; if not it rises to 118g if you need to attach them via the interface and spacers for LOOK style sole drilling. Adding in the weight of the seven screws needed for fitting, we got 163g per pedal, cleat and interface with two standard adapters that fitted my standard SiDi soles. This compares well to other top of the line pedals from LOOK and Shimano. See the Preview for a comparison with other pedals.

Colours

Whilst the grey colour of our test pair may not be the most inspiring it does go with just about any bike, and if you are after something to match your own bike’s paint scheme, then you’ll have no doubt noticed that the pedals come in a variety of colours, from Cannondale green to SKY blue…

Set-up

I wrote the Preview article for these Speedplay Zeros some six months ago now.
