Revolights City v2.0 Review

Durability

I have had the Revolights in use for nearly 5 months now. While they haven’t been through a full winter, they have been through hundreds of miles of commuting, lunch hour training rides that have been everything from road to wood chip trail, from grass and gravel, and a couple of very long, very wet weekend training rides. Wet and dry, this set of Revolights have seen everything except for freezing temperatures and snow- well, at least not yet. In that time, they have been nothing but faithful and reliable. Keep them charged and they will not let you down.

Concerns

Praise aside, I did come up with a couple of other issues with the Revolights in my time with them. The first is that you cannot hang your bike by it’s wheels. I have storage hooks in my garage and the light rail cars here use a thin bar to hook your front wheel and hold it up. If you were to try and put the hook or bar through, all of the weight of the bike would rest on the Revolight light rings, something that it is clearly not designed to handle and which the company would tell you not to do!

The second issue came up during one of my long wet weekend rides. About an hour in, I peeked back to see if I could still see the rear light (I was also testing the battery life at the time). While the lights were still on, instead of holding steady at the back of the tire, the non-drive side ring was tracking with the wheel, going around and around, while the drive side continued to operate properly.

Thinking I had possibly knocked the magnet loose, I stopped and checked the adjustment but any closer and it would have been rubbing the ring. I continued on, planning to contact Revolights later that day as the non-drive side ring continued to track with the wheel for a good solid 2 hours…

However, when I was cleaning up the bike later that evening, I fired up the lights just to see if it was still acting ‘wonky’. Nope, no issues; they worked perfectly once again and have ever since, something that Revolights and myself are chalking up to a possible loose connection in a first off the production line sample, as they have not heard of this issue from anyone else.

Wrap-up

While I don’t think they could ever replace my 350 lumen bar mounted headlight for really lighting up the road when my rides start in the dark, they do make for a great set of lights to make your presence known. They do cast some light and for most city and urban situations, I had no problem riding around with just the Revolights. They also offer some very appealing side visibility, something that most standard headlights lack, mine included.

All of this adds up to a great city/urban light set that will get you noticed, and not only for safety reasons but for lighting up your bike in a cool and unique way.
