Spiuk Brios Shoes

Before reading this review, go to the Spiuk Brios Preview article that I wrote back in March to get the basic introductory low down on these shoes. You can then come back and read this review to see how I got on after 5-months of testing these shoes…

Immediately the first thing you notice about the Brios is the spacious toe box. It gives them an almost square shape to the front of the shoe. Once I got them on my feet, I could feel straight away that there was a lot more room for my toes than with most other shoes. Could this finally be the end of cramped feet?

Of course the danger with spacious shoes is that you cannot get them tight enough to offer the required security and power transfer. The Spiuk Brios seems a bit underpowered in this area as well. Each shoe has a single ratchet closure and a single velcro strap that sits on top of a padded tongue. This tongue is heavily padded and meant that I couldn’t crank up the ratchet as tight as I normally would, but after a few months of riding I’m thinking that this is a good thing…

I’m probably not the only rider that tightens his shoes up to the max, without really thinking why? It’s just something I always do. All that over-tightening, while it feels secure, has probably not been doing my feet any good and probably explains why my feet get sore on long rides. So while I couldn’t get that ‘oh yeah, that’s tight’ feeling with the Brios, it didn’t affect my riding and the shoes actually held my feet firmly in place. I wasn’t feeling my foot lift on the pedal upstroke or squirm around in the shoe at all.

I did think that there is a bit of excess material between the ratchet and the velcro strap, it didn’t affect the comfort of the shoe, but it does detract from the look a little.
