Dark Energy Chain Wax

Muc‑Off Unveils Dark Energy Chain Wax: A New Contender in the Drip‑On Wax Race

Wax‑based chain lubrication has exploded in popularity, with many riders embracing the hot‑wax method for its low friction and clean running. But while melting wax and dipping chains delivers impressive results, it’s undeniably a faff. Muc‑Off’s new Dark Energy Chain Wax aims to bridge that gap – promising hot‑wax performance in a simple drip‑on formula.

After four years of development, more than 90 prototype blends, and over 100,000km of real‑world testing, Muc‑Off claims Dark Energy hits the elusive balance of efficiency, durability and low drivetrain wear. For riders who want a fast, quiet, and clean chain without the slow‑cook ritual, this could be a compelling alternative.

Four Years, 8,500 Test Hours, and a Lot of Tribology

Muc‑Off’s R&D team put Dark Energy through an unusually rigorous process. Inside their lab, each formulation was screened using ASTM‑standard tribology tests to measure friction and wear. High‑performing blends were then run on dynamometers in both clean and contaminated conditions.

To quantify wear, Muc‑Off used white‑light interferometry capable of measuring down to 0.1 microns; that’s around 700 times thinner than a human hair. The equipment sits on an air‑isolation table to eliminate micro‑vibrations, ensuring repeatable results. It’s the kind of detail that will appeal to riders who obsess over marginal gains.

Tested by Pros, Refined by Feedback

Lab data was only the first hurdle. Muc‑Off’s in‑house testers rode each formula to destruction across all conditions, before handing samples to their roster of pro teams. Riders and performance staff from EF Pro Cycling, Decathlon CMA CGM, Commencal // Muc‑Off, and Specialized Factory Racing fed back into the development loop.

The final formula has already seen race‑winning action, supporting Naomi Rüegg’s victory at the Tour Down Under earlier this year.

Independent testing by Robert Khünen in Germany and ESR Technology in the UK further validated Muc‑Off’s in‑house results.

PFAS‑Free, PTFE‑Free, and Biodegradable

Dark Energy Chain Wax is free from PFAS and PTFE, and uses plant‑derived, inherently biodegradable wax – a welcome move for riders who care about environmental impact as much as performance.

New Chain Wax Cleaner Launched Too

Alongside the wax, Muc‑Off has introduced Chain Wax Cleaner, designed specifically for wax‑prepped drivetrains. It removes factory grease, old wax, and contaminants without leaving residues that could compromise adhesion. Ideal for both initial prep and re‑wax cycles.

Pricing and Availability

  • Dark Energy Chain Wax

I've riding and racing bikes since I was 12, which was a long time ago now! From the days of steel, wool and toe-clips, to carbon-fibre, lycra and clip-less, it's been an adventure on and off road, with a bit of track and touring as well. There's nothing that can't be made better with a bike ride!
