Magicshine EVO 1700SD

Magicshine EVO 1700SD – lighting control at your fingertips

New from Magicshine is the EVO 1700SD, this is an evolution of the original model and adds Di2 integration. Like its predecessor the EVO 1700SD uses a dual-beam system with both high and low beams. The low beam has a clear cut-off line that focuses light directly on to the road. Magicshine say this is to enhance visibility while avoiding blinding oncoming traffic. And with 1700 Lumens of lighting power on tap you’ll need to be aware of other road-users!

When you switch to darker roads then it’s time to switch to high beam. Here Magicshine says the EVO 1700SD can project a powerful beam that significantly improves visibility. This bigger, brighter beam should allow you to spot objects earlier, especially when travelling at speed.

EVO 1700SD – built to endure

Magicshine say the EVO 1700SD, which is built from a mix of aluminium and plastic, is “built to endure“. It’s also “optimised for heat dissipation and resistance to various weather conditions,” and has an IPX6 rating. What’s an IPX6 rating mean? Officially it means its proof against; “Powerful water jets. Water sprayed for 3 minutes at 15 psi (100 kPa), with 100 litres per minute.” So it should be fine to take out in the rain!

The Magicshine EVO 1700SD

The EVO 1700SD is powered by a 4000mAh battery, which can be recharged via a USB-C cable. Run times will vary depending on what light setting you’re using. Magicshine claim it will run for eleven hours on its lowest setting, while on maximum you’ll get two hours.

Shimano Di2 integration

What sets the EVO 1700SD apart from its sibling is the ability to control your lights via your shifters. This means you can swap between light settings without removing your hand from the shifters. This means you can stay in control of your bike, handy when descending or in traffic, etc. You just have to pair with your rear derailleur and you have control.

It will be interesting to see how much customisation is possible, or if you have to stick with the offered set-up. The EVO 1700SD allows you keep your handlebars clear of clutter, by fitting underneath an out-front mount. That’s another big bonus for me, as I hate having lights sitting ono top of my handlebars.

The EVO 1700SD will be available after July ’24, we’ll let you know pricing once it’s launched. In the meantime head over to Magicshine’s website, or take a look at some of their other lights, or their Windbreaker glasses.
