Lake Winter Insole – Christmas Sorted
Jingle Bells and icy toes, winter riding means cold feet. The Lake Winter Insole could help with that.
Once the temperature starts to drop long rides can get a little uncomfortable. Your extremities suffer first and usually worst. As cyclists we will spend money like mad trying to keep the cold at bay. We wrap our feet in special socks, winter boots and heated overshoes; anything to keep the cold at bay. Just take a look at Ekoi’s offerings in our recent article. While I thought their combination sounded winter-proof, maybe the Lake Winter Insole could add to the war on cold?
You may have come across Lake before, they’re an American brand with their HQ on Lake Michigan in Illinois. Why is that relevant? Well, Lake Michigan gets some of the coldest weather in the US and cyclists there know a thing or two about dealing with the cold.
While you could go the whole hog and buy one of their winter boots that are rated down to -20°C, they do have a cheaper option. The Lake Winter Insole allows you to have a little of Lake’s winter know-how, even if you don’t own a pair of their shoes.
How does the insole work?
This insole can be added to the inside of your shoe and with its three-layer build, help keep you warm. The insole uses a layered construction of felt, aluminium foil and air bubbles! That top felt layer is made from recycled fibres and helps wick away moisture. Keeping your feet dry is important when it comes to staying warm, so that top layer is vital.
Next you have a radiant reflective layer, this reflects heat from your feet back and keeps the cold out. The final barrier is made up of a layer of insulating air pockets. These create an an insulating barrier so that the heat or cold cannot be conducted. With the Lake Winter Insole being rated down to 0°C this could be a useful ally in the war on winter. And at €29.99/£19.99 they’re a lot cheaper than a pair of Lake’s MXZ400 boots!
