There are three dimensions of the perfect item of kit that I look for – fit, function and style. A golden triangle of perfections, these tights actually meet all three criteria and the price is good too.
First of all the fit: I’m tall – 1.80m or 5’11” – which means that I usually have to buy men’s tights, or more usually, legwarmers, to wear with women’s shorts. Yet these women’s tights (size large, which is good for size 10-12) are actually long enough in the leg for me – in fact they are probably too long for most people, but you wouldn’t easily be able to turn them up because they have a zip at the ankle. In fact you don’t really need the zip because the fabric is very stretchy.
And the stretchy fabric means that they are easy to put on, they stay snug and hold the excellent padding in place which means that you can move about on the bike, and jump on and off cyclo-cross stylee without snagging them on the saddle. I’m happy that dhb have created the tights to fit riders with sporty thighs. This means the fit is very different to fashion leggings where you’d normally have to go up a size.
Next up is function: these tights are lovely and warm, comfortable and hold their shape in the rain. They are not windproof and best when the temperature is above zero. The high back keeps your kidneys warm, and they even stay up without the halter strap in place. Which I did during one ride when I chose not to wear the strap round my neck.
The halter strap was actually a bit short for me so I got the sewing machine out and made an extension. The halterneck is a brilliant device – it means that you don’t have uncomfortable straps over your boobs and it’s a simple manoeuvre to pull the back of the tights down when you need to pee. The strap feels noticeable when you’re standing up, but is designed to fit perfectly once you’re in a riding position.
Finally the style: the perfect fit and streamlined styling means that these make you look very lean and mean on the bike. You can forget about them because they fit so well, don’t chafe or sag and allow you to ride in comfort. But you’ll notice how they make you ride that bit harder and faster, which always looks good!
