Last year I rode most of the Wiggle CX Sportive series, including the first running of their CX Century – I rode this event and it was one of my highlights of 2015, you can read it here – including the promise of new events to be added later in the year. ‘Cross sportives have been around for a while now, but if you haven’t had a go yet I can thoroughly recommend it!
The format involves riding your bike, any bike, in fact they list what type of bike you ride on the day, so that you see how you fare compared with other like minded riders. So if you want to claim to be the fastest rider on a chopper, you can!
The event notes also include a handy colour coded graphic that show just how much on and off road there is on the course. This can be handy when choosing which bike to take, or just stick to your ‘cross bike and ride like cyclo-cross god!
Included on the day are a choice of three routes, usually from 40 to 80 kilometres. Hot and cold drinks and food are available at the start, along with free CNP energy drinks. Mobile assistance, electronic chip timing and feed stops are also included. Paper and GPX maps are available, alongside the usual route marking.
I found the vibe very friendly, with riders keen to check what other people were riding, great if you’re thinking of buying a ‘cross bike/gravel bike. I saw all kinds of bikes, including a couple of old school touring bikes on last year’s events.
So if you fancy something different on the sportive front, or maybe your ‘cross season is over, but your not ready to put the cyclo-cross bike away, head over to the CX Sportives website and have a go. I’ll be riding most of the series as training for my second go at the CX Century, I reckon I can go quicker this year!
