Finding the time to get out and ride between the day job and the lingering dark evenings was proving to be an itchy itch which needed a good scratching and finally the opportunity presented itself this Thursday to stretch my legs around woods and trails local to me.

The ride is sublime, the steel frame is stiff enough but flexi enough to feel like it isn’t there at all, just a generally delicious floaty feeling and the sound of knobbly tyres, pumped to 40psi, cruising on the roads and woodland trails. That’s not to suggest the bike isn’t responsive; the fork offers spritely but controlled steering and the back end giving just that right amount of va-va-vroom as you press down hard on the pedals or out of the saddle to push up the climbs.

The Avid BB7 disc brakes give you instant feedback with just the right amount of compression on the levers to be comfortable, even on the boggiest of woodland trails – there’s none of that grinding paste on expensive rims and the shonky stopping ability of canti’s.

Over all I am extremely pleased with the bike build – essentially the Fixie. Inc. PURE BLOOD is a race bike, it doesn’t come with the ‘do it all’ everything bike label that many Cyclocross offerings have these days; there are no eyelets for mudguards for example and certainly no rack eyes, keeping the frame aesthetically smooth and fuss free; even the disc brakes are direct mounted to the frame and fork. On original release of this PURE BLOOD model the frame came with an additional set of single speed drop outs which are interchangeable if you wanted to switch from geared set-up, though the later models lost this little detail as not many people actually bothered to switch.
