Katusha’s riders can also choose the Ultimate CF SLX we featured last year. At 790g for a medium frame the Ultimate CF SLX is a true featherweight. Canyon designed the Ultimate CF SLX to be light and comfortable, without losing any stiffness. These are the same frames that have been ridden to success on the World Tour circuit; if they’re stiff enough for the pros, they’re stiff enough for you and me.
Lightness has been achieved with new tube profiles, which have been scanned in Canyon’s unique CT scanner, an industry first which we have talked about before. Using data from the scanner Canyon have been able to trim out any excess material in the tubes. Canyon also use more ultra high modulus carbon fibre in their carbon lay-up, which means lighter tubes and joints. The Ultimate CF SLX has full carbon dropouts and uses a carbon, rather than the more normal aluminium, bottom bracket housing.
Canyon have reinforced key areas such as the junction between the seat-stays, seat tube and top tube keeping the connections wider and thus stiffer. The 320g One One Four fork again uses Canyon’s VCLS technology to keep it stiff yet flexible enough to absorb road vibration.
Sitting on top of the Ultimate’s fork is the Acros Ai-70 headset. This clever little device does away with the usual expander bolt or starnut by clamping against the bottom of the stem and the frame, saving weight and avoiding any potential weak spot on the steerer. Watch the video at the end of the article to see a demonstration of how the Ai-70 works.
As a frame the Canyon Ultimate CF SLX will cost you a reasonable £1759. The top of the range, limited edition Ultimate CF SLX 9.0 ETE will cost you £5,539. That’s a lot of money, but it is a lot of bike and in the world of super bikes the price is surprisingly reasonable.
