PIRELLI SmarTUBE RS

PIRELLI SmarTUBE RS – time to change your rubber?

Pirelli claims to have pushed inner-tube performance to the next level with their new SmarTUBE RS. These add to the SmarTUBE range that we covered previously. These new inner-tubes have been developed for elite-level racing and ‘serious cyclists’. Pirelli says the high-performance TPU tube delivers tubeless-like speed and weight savings, without the complexity of sealant or installation hassles.

Pirelli SmarTUBE RS inner tubes

Constructed from a new proprietary TPU compound, SmarTUBE RS is said to reduce rolling resistance and weight, while improving durability and air retention. Pirelli’s claims for the new compounds are:

  • +12% rolling efficiency vs. the standard SmarTUBE
  • +24% faster than traditional butyl tubes
  • Just 32 grams (26/35-622 size with 42mm valve)
  • 32% thicker for added resilience without sacrificing speed
  • Wider fit: covers tyre widths from 26 to 35 mm

Race-Tested by the Pros

The SmarTUBE RS is already proving itself at the highest level, with Alpecin-Deceuninck and Lidl-Trek using them during mountain TTs and Grand Tour stages. Pirelli recommend pairing them with their P ZERO Race RS clinchers, for their fastest-ever tube-type setup. This combination they believe will rival tubeless setups for speed, without the mess or maintenance.

TPU pros and cons

At just 32g, the SmarTUBE RS is claimed to be one of the lightest tubes on the market. While being super light is great, durabilty is also important. There is a warning on the SmarTube RS tech sheet against using them on rim-braked wheels. This is presumably because of potential heat build-up on long descents causing the tube to deflate. A look around internet forums suggests that many riders use them with rim brakes without any issues. It seems that the problem comes when using ‘super-light’ tubes with rim brakes. Something to consider if you are still using rim brakes.

Another issue to conside is repairability. While you can repair a TPU tube – something I haven’t tried yet – a cursory look online suggests that it may not be as quick as with a traditional butyl tube. I always carry spare tubes on a ride, leaving any repairs for when I get home, but maybe you don’t. So this could be something to consider. I’ll get a set of SmarTUBE RS tubes in to test and Pirelli’s SmarTUBE Patch Kit and let you know how I get on.
