Cervelo Rca
[two_third]
The Rca’s Squoval 3 tube shapes have now morphed into a combination of the original square profile and one that has a more aero leading edge. However, not all tubes have had this treatment; for example, engineers at Cervélo have profiled the down tube so that at the top, where it sits in the shadow of the front wheel it is nearly square like the original Squoval shape. As you progress down the tube and move further away from the protection of the front wheel the profile becomes more aero.
Also previous research had shown that tubes that were horizontal needed no aerodynamic shaping, such as the top tube and chainstays, so these have profiles that maximise strength and stiffness. A neat touch with the chain stays are hollow carbon fibre dropouts. These allow mechanical cables a straighter run through to the derailleur, minimising friction. This method of construction has also allowed Cervélo to save another 5g over their usual methods; minimal gains that all go towards the Rca’s low weight.
Attention to detail is everything and this extends to the overall mechanical cable routing where, as in the chainstays, Cervélo have worked to minimise twists and bends, reducing friction and keeping the shifting as crisp and light as possible. They have used an internal cable guide that is easily accessible for cable changes without having to remove anything else.
As well as catering for mechanical shifting, the Rca has been future proofed with the addition of interchangeable internal cable stops. These will easily click in and allow you to change between mechanical, electronic or hydraulic shifting and braking. This helps keep the frame looking neat and removes some of the ‘draggy’ cables.
