The Best Cyclo-Cross Race Bikes

Ridley X-Night
Along with Colnago, these Belgian bikes are found mostly at the front of World Cup cyclo-cross races. The top of the line bike, the Ridley X-Night is gorgeous with one piece swoopy monocoque frame and an integrated seatpost. It is light and stiff. All internal cable routing to protect from the mud, a disc brake option, replaceable dropouts (not just the hanger!), and a beefy 1.125/1.5 headset highlight the company’s experience and attention to detail. Unfortunately, rainbow bands are mandatory with the white and black paint scheme.
Specialized Crux Carbon Cantilever
Zdenek Stybar showed up to cyclo-cross races on a bright pink Specialized last year. The bike and rider stuck out like a sore thumb in a field of blue, black, and white bikes. It was a great marketing exercise for US giants Specialized and the perfectly, contrary color for the sloppy dead of winter conditions of Belgium and Holland in December. Now you can mirror the audaciousness with the S-WORKS CRUX carbon OSBB which is available in black, white, and pink. With a swoopy design similar to the road going Tarmac, it’s instantly recognizable. A disc brake option is available further down the Crux line, but Specialized’s best cross frame is cantilever only. Are you brave enough to go pink? If not don’t worry, as there are other colours.
Cannondale SuperX Hi-Mod Disc
Cannondale was one of the forerunners in alternative frame material bikes; their groin battering aluminium frames of the 80s and 90s were stiff, unyielding monsters. Although Cannondale continues to produce aluminium frames, today many of their cyclo-cross and road frames are carbon. The SuperSix Evo road frame was rated best bike in the world by the German Tour Magazine and we suspect the carbon cyclo-cross bike is just as tidy. Complemented with SRAM components, a black and green paint scheme, and disc brakes, this looks a winner.
