We take a brief look at the Ashmei Bib Short v.3.

With the days getting longer – but not any warmer or drier – it’s time to venture back out on the road. While you can rack up your winter miles virtually, it’s good to get outdoors. While that can mean glorious crisp winter’s days, it can also mean soggy winter miles. You’ll want clothing that will keep you comfortable on your ride, as happy in the wet as the dry. To this end I’ll be trying out the Ashmei Bib Short V.3.

Ashmei claim that they “produce the very best performance athletic apparel in the world”! No small statement to make and it’s what first caught my attention. Aiming squarely at the top end of the market, Ashmei’s clothing is designed from the ground up for maximum performance. Performance comes before price as far as founder Stuart Brooke is concerned. He has been in the sportswear business for twenty-five years, working with some very well know names.

When Ashmei first started their focus was on running apparel, but they soon noticed that cyclists were also buying it. Branching out into cycle specific clothing was an obvious choice. When designing their cycling kit Ashmei say they start with a “blank canvas”, deciding which fibres are best for that athlete and activity. Once they’ve decided, they then produce bespoke materials.

One example of this is the Ashmei Bib Short V.3 which uses a microfibre ultra stretch fabric. The tightly woven nature of the microfibre means they are wind and water-resistant. This is achieved through the microfibre’s woven construction, rather than any surface treatemnt. The means it won’t ever wash out.

The material is also very light and quick drying, perfect if you are travelling light and washing them overnight. The woven construction also allows for a firmer grip around the leg, meaning grippers aren’t needed to prevent them riding up, or flapping in the wind.

The chamois is made from a high density foam that doesn’t absorb moisture like traditional foam pads. This makes it fast drying, again handy for that bikepacking holiday you’ve been planning.

I’ll be trying out the Ashmei Bib Short V.3 over the coming months, as I finally emerge from my virtual winter training. Hopefully they’ll protect me from the rain in the UK and comfortable on long Mallorcan training rides; I’ll let you know.
