Preview of the Clement Strada LGG tyre: classic style, with the Classics in mind

Road tyres have slowly been gaining in size over the last few years. You have to wonder if there is a performance gain, or is it simply a more comfortable choice? To test this, I could just throw on a set of bigger tyres and ride around to see what the fuss is about. I could… or I could enter the Omloop van der Drie Dorpen, a League of Veteran Racing Cyclists’ race run over small country roads and notably, dirt tracks. Seems like the perfect Classics style test for the pair of Clement Strada LGG tyres we’ve just had in…

I will be trying the Clement Strada LGG in the 28mm wide, 120 Thread Per Inch version. Clement also offer it in both 23mm and 25mm widths (plus 25 only for the tubular) and with both 60 TPI or 120 TPI carcasses. The 120TPI version features a dual compound tread, with softer sides for added grip in the corners. All versions include a puncture protection belt under the tread and looking at the Omloop’s roads I think I’ll be needing all the security I can get.

The Strada LGG has a soft, supple feel to them that says ‘quality’. With their smooth centre and chevron side they have a traditional look to them, the sort that gives you a feeling of confidence considering the test they are about to be subjected to. Clattering over gravel, potholes and mud at race pace, I need to be confident that the tyres will be up for the job.

And if you’re wondering what the LGG is named after, it’s the airport code for Liege, Belgium, heart of the Ardennes and of course home to the Liège–Bastogne–Liège classic cycle race, the oldest of the Classics.

Something for the weekend sir?

Once the Strada LGG has finished it’s duties on the Omloop, I will be transferring it on to my beloved old steel training bike, the only bike in my stable with enough clearance for their girth, to see how they perform in non-racing, high mileage type situations…
