Revolights City v2.0 Review

Changing a tire

One of the initial concerns raised in our introductory article was that these seemed like they had the potential to cause problems for the roadside flat tire repair. I can now report with full certainty that, while a little in the way, it’s not bad. If you’re running Kevlar/folding bead tires, they most likely will present very little inconvenience whatsoever. If you’re running a wire bead tire and are accustomed to being able to hook your tire lever to your spoke, then you may want to get ready to use both hands to hold tire levers…

I say this because on an attempted lunch ride, half a mile in, I had to remove a quarter inch piece of metal from my tire. I’m currently running Vittoria Randoneur 28’s, which have a reasonably tough wire bead. I found the Revolights got in the way of my usual technique of locking in one tire lever, when the tire decide to be stubborn (and, of course, that day they did), whilst using a second to get the bead to break over.

Instead of being able to lock the tire lever to a spoke, I had to maintain pressure with my left hand while working the second lever in with my right hand. While slightly awkward, I was still able to get the job done.

I also found getting at the presta nut a bit annoying since it is now flanked on either side by the Revolights. Again, it was only slightly awkward and once you get the hang of it, it’s a mere minor annoyance – especially compared to the flat tire!

Re-mounting the tire was easy enough since the Revolights are basically out of the way. While I initially thought that fitting the pump to the presta valve might have been problematic, both my hand pump and my floor pump fit in the gap between light rings with ease.
