Cyclocross and Road Disc Wheelsets
Mid Price Wheels
These wheels are a new lighter, tubular version of the CX Masterdisc wheelset we tested recently. They use Remerx RTX CX Tubular rims built onto a Remerx aluminium hub suitable for 6 bolt disc brake rotor. They are available in a range of spoke and hub colours, and use a 24/24, two cross pattern build.
As tubulars they are not as versatile as the previous clincher wheelsets, but are more suited to racing with a weight for a pair of 1595g. They would make a good pair of race wheels for someone looking to get serious about cyclocross racing. As such the cost is reasonable at £375, though you should factor in the cost of tubular tyres to mount on them…
Stans NoTubes: Alpha 340 Disc Road/Cyclocross Wheelset
Stans NoTubes have carved a nice little niche in the market for themselves, catering for those who are keen to go tubeless. Known for good quality rims and affordability, the competition has a lot to live up to.
The Alpha 340 offer clincher rims that are tubeless ready for road or cyclocross. Stan’s 3.30 Disc hubs keep the wheels affordable but light. Apparently the can also be used with rim brakes. The build is 32/32 with DT Supercomp Black spokes and they weigh in at 1520g a pair. Naturally as we are getting lighter, the price increases and these are £500.
Stans NoTubes ZTR Ironcross Wheelset
According to the marketing bumph the Iron Cross disc rims are designed for superior burp resistance with low pressure tubeless tyres. You can also use traditional large volume, tubed cyclocross clinchers. They have wide rims with a 20mm internal rim width and over 23mm external. They are built with Stans 3.30 Disc hubs and use 24/28 Black Supercomp DT spokes. The weight is spot on at 1520 grams, and they come with yellow rim tape and 35mm valves installed for tubeless use for a cost of £425.
Easton EA90 XD – Disc Ready and Road Tubeless ready.
The EA90 have an alloy rim that is wide at 25mm. The EA90 XD clincher has been designed specifically for Cyclocross and utilises Easton’s proprietary tubeless rim design, with a wide rim that benefits bigger volume ‘cross tyres. They are built with Easton’s M1 sealed cartridge bearing hubs and Sapim double-butted spokes. Easton say these wheels are light, fast and bombproof. Ideal for cross then.
They have a 20 spoke, 3-cross pattern build on the front wheel and a 24 spoke, 3-cross pattern at the rear wheel. The weight is reasonable at 1620g a pair considering they cost £745. Easton quality comes at a cost…
So in the mid-range you can get lighter wheels and better components that suit racing applications, though in terms of weight shedding just 300 grams comes at a cost. These are likely to be the most popular wheels when it comes to upgrading or initially speccing a new build. So what is there at the top of the sector if you are looking for out and out race day wheels and you have a bit more budget to play with?
