Bead Dropper and Bead Bro

CushCore Bead Dropper and Bead Bro: Two Tools That Make Stubborn Tyres Behave

If you’ve been riding off‑road for a while, you’ll have noticed how much tyres have changed. They’re wider, tubeless, inserts are increasingly common and even the once‑untouchable Presta valve is being challenged by hi‑flow alternatives. All good things; until you have to remove a tyre that’s formed a lifelong emotional bond with your rim. Fortunately, CushCore have stepped in with a pair of tools that genuinely make life easier: the Bead Dropper and the Bead Bro.

Some of my tyre/rim combinations require an hour of thumb‑destroying effort just to break the bead. Whether it’s the sealant, rim profile, or simply the universe testing me, but it’s a job I dread. And that’s in the comfort of my garage. If it happened mid‑ride, I’d be in trouble.

Bead Dropper: The Oversized Lever You Didn’t Know You Needed

The Bead Dropper was originally designed for riders using CushCore inserts. These push the tyre firmly against the rim and can make installation and removal a bit of a wrestling match. But even without inserts, this thing is a revelation.

The Bead Dropper

It’s essentially an oversized, reinforced tyre lever with a shape that gives you far more authority over the bead. On some of my more stubborn tyres, the Bead Dropper had the bead off in seconds; exactly what I’d been hoping for. No drama, no slipping hands, no muttered curses. Just a bit of pressure and the bead drops, opening the door for the rest of the removal.

The vinyl‑covered handle and “thumb flange” give you plenty of grip and once the bead is broken, you can simply carry on using it like a normal lever. It’s not so big that you couldn’t carry it on a ride, either; pocketable if you’re determined, backpack‑friendly if you’re sensible.

Bead Bro: The Third Hand for Tricky Installations

The Bead Bro is one of those tools you don’t think you need… until you do. It solves a very specific but very real problem: tyres that refuse to stay put during installation.

You know the scenario. The first side of the tyre goes on without complaint. You start working the second side on, everything’s going well and then just as you’re nearly home, the section you started with decides to wander off around the rim. Suddenly you’re chasing the bead in circles.

The Bead Bro

I’ve tried all sorts of improvised solutions: holding the wheel on the floor, wedging another lever behind it, zip ties… it all works eventually, but life is too short for this kind of faff.

The Bead Bro fixes it neatly. Clip it over the rim, hook it onto a spoke, screw it down, and it holds the bead exactly where you want it. CushCore describe it as “like having a third hand”, and for once the marketing line is spot‑on. The only caveat: it’s really for MTB rims. If you’re running deep‑section road wheels, this isn’t the tool for you.

Final Thoughts

CushCore’s Bead Dropper and Bead Bro aren’t flashy, but they solve two very real problems that modern tyres can present. If you’ve ever battled a stubborn bead – especially with inserts – these little tools can turn a dreaded job into a quick, almost pleasant one.
