Muc-Off Road and Gravel Sealant
Muc-Off’s new Road and Gravel Sealant has been designed for the higher pressures used in these tyres.
While MTBs have sealant sorted, road and gravel sealant has to work a lot harder. The issue is the higher pressures found in these tyres, especially in road tyres. Sealant works by carrying particles suspended in a carrier liquid towards a hole in the tyre. As the air rushes out it takes the sealant with it, the particles then start to block the hole. As more sealant passes through more particles are deposited, slowing the air. Eventually enough particles have built up and finally the puncture is sealed.
This works really well with MTB tyres that run on much lower pressure than road or gravel tyres. However when you add that same sealant to a road tyre that is at 80psi or higher, it’s not so straightforward. The same sealant that you used on your high-volume/low-pressure MTB tyre is now having to deal with a low-volume/high-pressure tyre. So now when a puncture happens the sealant is blasted out at much higher speed. This makes it a lot harder for the particles to block the hole and therefore the puncture doesn’t seal. Plus you and your bike are now covered in slime!
Road and Gravel Sealant
Muc-Off’s new Road and Gravel Sealant seeks to solve this problem by changing the materials used in the sealant to block the holes. These have to be large enough to block the holes and strong enough to withstand the air pressure. Rather than using synthetic fibres – there’s enough of those polluting the environment already – Muc-Off instead turned to nature.
This new Road and Gravel Sealant uses a mix of bamboo fibres and mineral flakes, suspended in a water-based synthetic latex carrier. It’s non-toxic, allergen free and “Advanced polymers” in the mix help the sealant cling to the inside of the tyre. All of these ingredients are in line with Muc-Off’s Project Green programme.
Muc-Off has been developing this new Road and Gravel Sealant at their own in-house R&D lab. With input from WorldTour teams, the new sealant has been tested under the harshest conditions. INEOS Grenadiers and EF Education EasyPost obviously trust it as they will be using it at all three Grand Tours this season.
Details and prices
Muc-Off says this new sealant will seal holes up to 7mm and can cope with pressures up to 110psi. It can be used with CO2 cannisters and will work with Muc-Off’s BAM instant puncture repair. This mix is able to cope with temperatures down to -15°C and will last for up to six months inside a tyre. It’s available in a 80ml pouch and a 500ml bottle, as well as a140ml pouch, and 1L and 5L bottle variants. Muc-Off Road and Gravel Tubeless Sealant is priced at:
- 80ml: £6.00 / €8.00 / $6.00
- 140ml: £10.00 / €13.00/ $10.00
- 500ml: £18.00 / €25.00 / $20.00
- 1L: £30.00 / €40.00 / $34.00
- 5L: £128.00 / €155.00 / $140.00
A word from the CEO:
Alex Trimnell, CEO at Muc-Off says; “With the ever-increasing number of riders converting from tubed to tubeless set-ups, especially in the road and gravel market, we focussed on developing a sealant which delivers superior performance even when the pressures get high. After years of development work, we’ve found the perfect blend of sustainability and performance – I’m stoked to be using bamboo fibre particles in the blend; it’s a world-first in sealant technology and it makes a massive difference to how the product performs”.
Muc-Off Road and Gravel Sealant is available from shops and the Muc-Off website now.
