Autumn/Winter Special: Polaris BambooTec Base Layer Preview
Simon Tuck
As part of our Autumn/Winter special we preview the Polaris BambooTec Base Layer.
As part of our Autumn/ Winter clothing testing I thought I’d try to find some base layers to go with all the Winter kit. You can have all the fancy clothing tech you like on the top layer, but it won’t be as effective if you don’t have a decent base layer. It’s a bit like when you tuck into a cheesecake and you find it’s got sponge at the bottom instead of the satisfying crunch you were expecting.
This long sleeved base layer from Polaris is made from Bamboo Charcoal Fibres. Bamboo Charcoal has some great properties for a base layer. It’s quite soft to the touch and has anti bacterial properties, which is why it’s often used in shoe insoles. The manufacturers mention that Bamboo Charcoal releases Far Infra Red rays, which can help maintain body temperature and improve circulation.
I’ve been to China and seen towers of bamboo scaffolding. I’ve also seen how quickly a friend’s pond was cleared of a nasty green algae just by putting some bamboo in the pond. Bamboo is a fast growing plant and not only should this mean it’s more environmentally friendly as a product, but it’s easier to produce and tends to be cheaper than merino. I’m interested to see how the bamboo base layer compares to the synthetic and merino items I have already.
