Road Cycling Shoes
Giro have made waves in the shoe world recently thanks to Taylor Phinney and his move back to laces. They are said to suit narrower, low volume feet.
Retro looks, bright colours and stiff Easton carbon soles make Giro shoes sort after items. All of our reviewers like the idea but not one owns a pair. However, one of our team riders does use them and really rates his orange and black Empires.
Mavic are narrower fitting shoes. The shoes are very light and stiff. At 190 grams for a size 8.5 the Huez is claimed to be the lightest shoe in the world.
Mavic shoes are a distinctive part of any cycle race, thanks to their bright yellow finish. One of our reviewers, racing at 1st cat, really rates them, and though he now races in SiDi, he would go back…
Fizik
Like many of the manufacturers here, Fizik, are not originally a shoe manufacturer and are best known for their saddles, but have since branched out into shoe design and production. Their top shoe is the Fizik R1 Uomo but they also do a Donna range for women.
With support from key riders such as David Millar and more recently Geraint Thomas and Phillippe Gilbert, their shoes have quickly gained a following. The design is very distinctive.
Diadora are well known in the sport’s shoe world but only one of our reviewers had experience of their cycling shoes and that was an MTB shoe. Their top of the line shoe is the Diadora Vortex Pro.
Diadora’s Vortex Pro features a highly cut out sole that allows air to circulate while keeping mud and water out.
The sole is constructed from 3K carbon that still keeps it stiff enough for riders on the World Tour’s Movistar team and the cooling effect will probably be appreciated on long, hot stages of the Grand Tours.
Bontrager
Trek’s in-house brand are well represented in the Pro peloton. The Bontrager XXX Road features a beautiful looking one piece upper.
We can tell you that Bontrager’s top shoes are super light, one of the lightest shoes we have ever got our hands on (the RXXXL Limited Edition are even lighter). The colours are bold and inspiring. The XXX Road uses two Boa IP1 dials and a velcro strap to fine tune your fit, while the Platinum Series Carbon sole keeps the shoes stiff and light. Although we’ve seen them up close, no one here has ridden them yet.
