Apex Bike Performance and the Apex Bike Fit System
Apex Bike Performance ‘designs and manufactures products that enable cyclists of all levels to improve their performance’; as part of that the company has created the first bike fit system in the world which is also capable of measuring biomechanical power and aerodynamic drag co-efficiency simultaneously.
The Apex Bike Fit System is a servo-assisted bike that takes the guesswork out of finding a rider’s optimum riding position by making micro-adjustments while the cyclist is actually pedalling and allows technicians to measure the rider’s power, cadence and heart rate. Combine this with torque analysis to every 1.5 degrees and torque force direction, and it can find the most effective position for every individual rider, quantifying the power and efficiency of that rider.
Further to this, the Apex Functional Movement Analysis (AFMA) provides data to help riders’ achieve their maximimum physical performance, through six exercises that determine a cyclist’s ‘biomechanical fingerprint’, identifying key physical strengths and weaknesses which in turn enables technicians to provide riders with a bespoke training programme to enhance their performance.
The company delivered a seminar at the International Cyclefit Symposium (ICS), the world’s premier multidisciplinary symposium for technicians dedicated to bike fitting, at the recent London Bike Show and their development team includes cycling professionals, biomechanical experts, remedial therapists, physiotherapists, strength and conditioning experts, orthopaedic surgeons and world-renowned bike fitting technicians. Together they aim to revolutionise the way cyclists ride and perform, whether it’s the daily commute or a competitive pro-tour.
For example, Ceri Pritchard is the Research & Development Director at Apex Bike Performance. Ceri has competed on the national and world stages, winning more than 15 British Championship medals throughout a cycling career in which he broke two British records for time trial and track competition. Between 1993 and 1996 he won four British titles and best all-rounder over 10 and 25 miles before representing Great Britain at the World Championships in San Marino in 1997. The following year he represented Wales at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games. He rode with what today is the Rapha Condor JLT Pro Cycling Team. A former world-class cyclist turned qualified engineer, Ceri has the ideal background for his role at Apex Bike Performance.
The system is used by a number of shops and will be in use by several pro tour and national teams, as well as local cycling clubs.
