Trigon XQC-01 Cyclocross
Many of these wheels already sported Shimano 10-speed cassettes, which even though they’ve seen good service on the road don’t seem to unduly bother the SRAM chain and rear mech.
In race form the Trigon will start with a set of matching Trigon CWC38 carbon wheels, as shown in the photo, wheels that have already seen good service in road racing. Though they are clinchers, I am hoping that cyclocross will give them a new lease of life. We may have to go tubeless eventually, though initial experiments have not been too fruitful.
As mentioned the Avid Shorty Ultimate brakes work well with the aluminium rimmed wheels but I have yet to settle on the perfect brake pads with the carbon wheels, as in testing it soon became clear that pads that were fine on the road are not necessarily up the job off-road when the conditions get wet and messy – I have had plenty of advice on which ones I need, though more always welcome.
A pair of Challenge Grifo XS tyres were designed to offer extra speed over the hard pack of the London summer race series but a bout of norovirus put paid to any chance of doing that. For the imminent muddier conditions of Autumn, a pair of Schwalbe Rocket Ron cross tyres will handle the gloop. Look out for reviews on both sets of tyres soon.
So now the road season is nearing an end, the plan is to campaign the Trigon over this cross season and report back on it once we have a better idea how it performs in the competitive, mucky conditions of the UK winter cyclocross scene.
