Trigon XQC-01 Cyclocross
As far as finishing kit goes, bars and stem are Pro Vibe which I had spare from an old race bike, whilst a Selcof seatpost and very old Sella Italia Flite saddle were also pressed into service.
I was forced to go new with the pedals as my collection of off-road pedals was limited and unsuitably worn. Crank Brothers pedals were highly recommended and indeed are something special. They are so easy to use and offer good performance and security. I have two sets on test – the Candy with its platform for extra stability and the minimalist Eggbeater. Look out for a full review soon.
Contrary to my expectations I have gotten on well with the Eggbeater and will probably commence racing with those. Initial training sessions have not left me wishing for anything extra that might be afforded by the Candy’s cage.
As mentioned we wanted this to be a fairly realistic project build so whilst the frame and groupset are new out of necessity, the finishing kit is mostly used to offer a semblence of reality. Hence the wheels all being plucked from the shed. In the Spring there was a pair of the excellent Fulcrum Racing Quattros we have on long-term test. Tyre wise I was able to use my Schwalbe Ultremo DD road tyres for training.
A pair of very dependable first generation Mavic Kysriums saw early summer duty wearing some heavy duty touring rubber in the shape of Schwalbe’s Marathon Plus. The logic here was to provide a tough set of training conditions as the tyres weigh in at a kilo each, and to ensure puncture free riding whilst messing about off-road, ‘perfecting’ my dismounts and remounts.
