October 2013

There was a lot of excitement around the launch of the latest Ridley cross bikes and now we have finally got the chance to put one through its paces thanks to regular contributor Rob Allen. This particular example has already completed the 3 Peaks Cyclo-cross race and a couple of local London cross races.

The model is the X-Night Disc 2014 and it sports full Red 22 hydro disc braked groupset. However, Rob has changed this set-up to his prefered single chainring rig, losing the front and rear mechs to save weight. In place of the double chainrings up front the uses a Wolf tooth 42 dropstop ring (see Tim’s review of this chainring elsewhere on CTR) mated to a X0 10-speed clutch rear mech.

Although running a 10-speed mech it is actually a fully 11-speed set-up. Levers and cassette are both 11-speed and the 1:1 pull ratio means that the 10-speed mech works with 11-speed levers and cassette.

Though he has a well stocked quiver of wheels, the wheels shown are Enve 29er tub rims fitted with FMB Grifo medium 34 tyres.

[…] Another complete cyclocross obssessive, Rob Allen starts off with expensive tastes as he’s looking for a pair of Zipp 303 disc brake tubular wheels. There’s a lot to these wheels with their very wide, 28.5mm at max, 45mm deep carbon rim and newly designed hub held together by 24 spokes front and back, in a 2-cross pattern at the front and virtual 3-cross at the rear. The front wheel weighs just 660g and the rear just 775g. On paper they look ideal for ‘cross racing and no doubt Rob is looking to put them to good use in his new Ridley X-Night. […]
