Trek Crossrip Elite £950
The US giant that is Trek has three bikes in it’s cyclo-cross range; the carbon framed Cronus and the aluminium Ion, both cyclo-cross race bikes, and this the Crossrip, that sits squarely in the do-it-all camp.
The Crossrip comes in two models, the plain Crossrip and the Elite. The Elite uses a compact chainset and Sora components, while the Crossrip uses a triple chainset and Shimano 2300 components. The Elite also gets Hayes CX5 mechanical disc brakes, while the Crossrip has Avid BB5 brakes.
A compact chainring will help on the road, but may actually be a little too big for cyclo-cross racing, but this is something you can easily change. It also sports some natty “vanishing fender mounts”, eyelets that can be screwed into the frame as and when they are needed.
Kinesis Crosslight 5T £934.99 – £999.99
Kinesis UK have been producing UK designed bikes since ’99 and have become well known for producing quality products at very reasonable prices.
The Kinesis Crosslight FiveT frame is a true all round performer, it’s a superb cyclo-crosser with many of the features of it’s bigger brother, the EVO4.
The 5T comes with Shimano Tiagra 10 speed levers and derailleurs. The levers have the gear cables running outside the bar tape, not like the new hidden style that Shimano are now using. You can also choose to change the 50t chainring for a more cyclo-cross friendly ‘BBB’ 46t chainring.
Twin bottle mounts plus rack and mudguard eyelets, give you option to take it on road for training or touring. You also have the option of Crosslight3 alloy or the PureCX carbon forks.
