If contaminated by, say, dust or grit, the adhesive may lose some of its stickiness. It’s a problem easily addressed by simply keeping the base tape on the inside of every fold. This, of course, leaves the tread, the most durable and wear-resistant part of the tyre, on the outside, which is the part exposed to rubbing and abrasion.
