Brake lever reach
How far from the rim should the blocks sit? Or, how far back should the lever come before they reach the rim? Here’s another case for personal preference, but in the absence of one it is worth noting that the wheel rims flex laterally, especially when riding out of the saddle, and will rub on the blocks if set too close.
Just the right amount of grease on the brake inner wire

Since modern brake calipers don’t flex much and offer loads of power, the blocks can safely be set so they come up against the rim as the lever comes about halfway back to the bars.
How close to the clamp should you cut the inner wire? Not so close that you can’t fit the end caps. Otherwise, as close as you like. Just make sure you do

cut it and don’t simply leave it looped and dangling from the caliper or gear mech.
And, finally, fit the little end caps. They are as much a safety item as a neat way to finish the cut end of the inner wire; without a cap, the wire can – will – fray, leaving numerous pin-sharp and often oily strands, each capable of puncturing skin. Use a tool with rounded surfaces to crimp the caps; a cutting edge will go straight through the soft alloy.

[…] I’m happy with the result. The gears change as smoothly as ever, the brakes work perfectly which is partly due to them being thoroughly stripped and cleaned as part of the process, and the bars are comfortable. I prefer thinner tape and I’m impressed how cushioned this tape is despite it’s lack of bulk. I tried to rip an offcut of the bar tape and I’m pleased to report that it held up well. Although bar tape is relatively cheap and most people treat it as a consumable you want it to stand up to a bit of abuse. For a thorough description of cables, take a look at our article on cable fitting. […]
