Bicycle cables

Cable route
Current dual-control levers offer a choice when routing the gear cables. Running the bicycle cables behind the bar is best done with double-groove bars where there is are grooves front and rear if the cable is not to form an uncomfortable ridge along the rear of the bar.

On today’s ‘compact’ frames, the route of the rear brake cable from top tube stop to caliper is often the hardest part of the whole job to get just right. The cable may need to make a sharp curve to make a clean approach at both ends. Cut it too long and not only will it look poor but the brake will feel weak and spongy.

Too short and, while it may look fine when the brake is not in use, it will adopt a sharp turn on leaving the caliper when the brake is operated. One way to get the length right is to cut a piece progressively shorter until it is too short – and then cut a new piece just that little bit longer.

The most satisfying part of the job may well be clamping the inner wire. However, tightening the clamp distorts and work-hardens the wire, which should not be clamped again at the same place or further from the nipple.

So, merely nip the wire with the clamp when making adjustments and be sure you have the quick-release lever done up and that the brake blocks are the desired distance from the rim before tightening the clamp fully.

[…] I’m happy with the result. The gears change as smoothly as ever, the brakes work perfectly which is partly due to them being thoroughly stripped and cleaned as part of the process, and the bars are comfortable. I prefer thinner tape and I’m impressed how cushioned this tape is despite it’s lack of bulk. I tried to rip an offcut of the bar tape and I’m pleased to report that it held up well. Although bar tape is relatively cheap and most people treat it as a consumable you want it to stand up to a bit of abuse. For a thorough description of cables, take a look at our article on cable fitting. […]
