ASTRAL X Glasses
ASTRAL X are the latest evolution of Rudy Project’s best-selling ASTRAL glasses.
Summer’s here and it’s time to get those sunnies out! Rudy Project’s ASTRAL X glasses are based on the original ASTRAL model. The Italian brand worked with their sponsored athletes to see where they could improve on the previous model. What they wanted was a little more protection and coverage. That input has led to the new model, which has a wider, higher lens. The difference isn’t huge – 3mm wider and 5mm taller – but should be noticeable once they’re on your face.
Category 3 mirrored lenses
Like the previous edition the ASTRAL X uses the brand’s RP Optics lenses. Designed with an anti-reflective treatment that reduces glare and improves contrast these should reduce eye-fatigue. They’re available in five different colours all of which offer 91% UV protection (Cat3). Manufactured from a tough and lightweight polycarbonate, they will protect your eyes from airborne debris.
Sustainable plastics
Rudy Project have chosen a bio-plastic by the name of Rilsan for the ASTRAL X frame. Rilsan is made from castor oil and is derived from the bean (seeds, actually!) of the castor plant. Grown in India, the beans are picked and after some clever chemistry, turned into a plastic. This is perfect for glasses as the material is light, flexible and durable. The frames come in either a matte or crystal finish and five colours and have an adjustable nose-piece. Rudy Project also offer an RX insert, so you can add your own prescription lenses if you need. The increased lens size has only resulted in a 2 gram weight gain.
Astral X is now available from £166 in five different colourways online from the Rudy Project store, or local retailers.
Rudy Project have been making sunglasses and helmets for athletes since 1985 and 100% of their glasses are made in Italy; read about their #RideToZero commitment. You can see their helmets and glasses on Team Bahrain Victorious riders like Matej Mohoric. We’ll be trying out the ASTRAL X glasses and will let you know if they make us ride like Matej!
