MAAP Dot and Type Merino Socks Preview

We take a brief look at the Dot and Type Merino winter socks from MAAP.
We’re heading into Spring, which means changeable weather. You’re rides will be sunny and bright one day, chucking it down the next. The big question you’ll face is “what socks shall I wear?” You’ll want something warm of course, but what if Mr Sun should appear, you’ll want to score some early points in the Sock Game, won’t you? Handily MAAP have you covered with their Dot and Type merino socks.
Australian brand MAAP kindly sent me these two quality pairs of socks to test out. Essentially they’re the same construction and materials but with different designs. Both pairs are made from a high quality merino blend in Italy, which goes some way to justifying the price tag. You can find MAAP socks in the UK for just over £20 a pair.
The price marks MAAP out as a premium brand, and it is. Collaborating with companies such as Basso, Suplest and Bellroy, MAAP are able to test their clothing range with their sponsored UCI Continental Team ‘State of Matter MAAP Racing’ and their amateur level ‘MAAP-Basso’ team. They don’t just make socks of course, they can clothe you from head to toe. My favourite on their website is the collaboration shoes they’ve designed with Swiss shoe maker Suplest.
The seven inch cuff on these socks is a popular length with pro and amateur cyclists. You should be safe from upsetting the rule sticklers if that sort of thing bothers you. No knee length aero gains here, these socks are made for comfort and style. There’s flat seams to reduce friction points and an elasticated section around the arch of the foot for support.
The designs of the MAAP socks are fairly subdued compared to some of their cycling kit, but there’s still some more interesting options in their range to give you an option. From plain white to stripes and fluoro socks with spots, there should be something for everyone but the most adventurous cyclist. I’m slightly favouring the Dot design at the moment. I like the anarchy of an otherwise plain grey sock being covered in turquoise spots. Both the Dot and the Type design come in charcoal or grey base colour. The reason for the plainer colours being that these are really Winter socks. As you’d expect MAAP has a full range of Summer socks which tend to be brighter colours and made from lighter, thinner material.
Technically these are Winter socks but being made from merino I expect that even on a fairly warm day they’ll cope pretty well. Merino naturally wicks sweat from the skin and has anti-bacterial properties to minimise unpleasant odours. Either way, the current changeable conditions of Spring should provide lots of different conditions to test them in.
