Could the Milkit Tubeless Valve and Refill Kit take a lot of the mess and uncertainty out of tubeless tyres?
I’m still new to the tubeless world, but I am convinced it’s a game changer; especially if like me, you’re using a ‘cross bike to cover long distances and are running your tyres at lower than normal pressures. No inner tubes means you will be running sealant in your tyres, but one thing I always worry about is just what state is the sealant in? Hidden away from sight, I’ve no idea if it’s still liquid, or if it has dried up; could the Milkit system be the answer?
It seems I’m not the only one having these worries; after product development engineer and addicted mountain biker Pius Kobler suffered a flat tyre while riding in Moab, California – all down to dried up sealant in his tyres – he decided to do something about it and so Milkit was born.
The Milkit system allows you to fill, replace and examine your sealant. A clear syringe allows you to add and take away sealant without getting it all over the tyres, the rims and you; or is that just me? You can check whether your sealant is still liquid, what it’s consistency is and how much you have before you ride. This is something I do wonder about, but it’s a bit of a faff to pop the tyre every time I want to know what’s going on in there.
The system’s key piece are the two tubeless valves. A one way rubber valve sits at the bottom of the valves, preventing sealant and air escaping, but allowing air and the measuring tubes in. All the parts are neatly contained in the cylinder’s plunger body, which keeps everything togther.
Using the system looks pretty straightforward and the valves have the added benefit of stopping the removable core from getting gunked up with sealant; exactly what is happening with my wheels at the moment. I’ll be using the Milkit system over the coming months and will let you know how I get on.
