Remerx RTX Disc Tubular Review
Accelerating out of corners or braking into them, the wheels responded quickly and confidently. We also found they tracked consistently in sloppy conditions, particularly on side hills, allowing the tyres to do their job. Impressively, the lateral stiffness did not equate to a rock-like ride. We found them slightly stiffer vertically than our steel-spoked carbon-rimmed tubs but not to the point that ride was uncomfortable or the rim compromised the tyre’s grip due to lack of compliance.
As mentioned previously, the rims feature a relatively wide, flat, rim bed. This is perfect for cyclocross as it ensures the most possible contact between the rim and the rim strip. As cyclocross tyres rely on the glue bond between the rim and the tubular much more than a road tyre does, the larger contact patch is extremely desirable.
Final Thoughts
You really can’t go wrong with these wheels. They are strong, fast, durable, light, and attractive. We raced them for a full season in tough conditions and were not let down once. As cyclocross can be as much a battle of equipment durability as physical acumen, we were very happy with their performance.
Our only long-term concerns might be the spoke durability. We’ve seen nothing to suggest they will be a problem, but a combination of proprietary design and a softer material do make us slightly apprehensive. We’ll update this article as we ride these wheels for a second full season in 2014.
The number of offerings in the sub-£500 range is growing all the time, but at £395 for the pair we aren’t aware of many wheels that offer the same bang for the buck. Highly recommended.
