Osprey Cyber Port Rucksack : Will it Fly?

Reviewing this pack, I thought it might be an idea to take an overview of Osprey. It’s an American company, perhaps older than you might expect, founded in 1974 making the company 40 years old. It has a strong reputation in packs for runners, mountain climbers and cyclists in particular.

I see Osprey packs regularly on the backs of cyclists – they are usually small, light and unobtrusive. The Cyber Port is a rather different affair. Bulky, the model I’m trying appears to be made of Tweed, and for a commuting pack is overtly designed around the tablet users.

That needs a little explanation. The bag is much larger than a tablet, but the Cyber Port has a special pouch with a transparent screen (a touch screen, TPU film window) allowing the user to operate the touchscreen without taking it out of the bag.

How this particular piece of design came to be is a little mystifying. Granted, tablets are ‘hot’ at the moment, so I suppose a lot of people have them. The idea is you are commuting, constantly moving about, and the Cyber Port has your tablet inside ready to use. It could be that if you were on a train, then this saves you the bother of taking the tablet out of the bag, but that means your whole bag is now the tablet.

Inside there are three separate compartments. The outer is the the tablet space; there is a small top pocket designed perhaps for a phone (possibly a small sandwich); and then the larger space includes a laptop pocket and various organisational pockets for gadgets, pens, a key fob etc.
