Continental Grand Sport Extra tyres have the German company’s PureGrip rubber compound which they claim ‘provides superb performance’ and ‘performance whatever the occasion’…

PureGrip is an advanced performance level, activated silica compound with ‘outstanding grip, elasticity and rolling properties’. They rank it just behind their top level BlackChili compound. Continental claim that ‘whilst providing great grip, it is also long lasting and highly durable’ so it sounds good. Conti have a new plant in Hefei, China which produces these Grand Sport tyres with the Pure Grip compound.

The Continental Grand Sport series of tyres come in three casing types to suit various uses; there’s the Light which is designed for competition; the Race which is for sportives; and the one we have in for review, the Extra which is for ‘heavy duty use’, making it sound like the perfect winter rubber for the hard training, daily commuting, high mileage cyclist.

The Grand Sports all have a 180 tpi casing designed to offer low rolling resistance, predictable handling and decent grip. Over this they then have a layer of Conti’s new NyTech breaker for the essential puncture resistance. It’s this that varies between the tyres and being the most durable, the Grand Sport Extra features a not one but a double NyTech breaker and a 3-ply sidewall.

The newly developed nylon fabric, NyTech layer is based on Conti’s other established puncture protection technology and is designed to be both resistant to punctures but to also have low rolling resistance and lighter weight.

Continental say that the Grand Sport is the ‘option for long, hard training miles or epic spring & autumn sportive rides’. The Grand Spot Extra we have comes in 23/25/28mm options and our 25mm weighed in at 320g. It’s no lightweight but promises many trouble free winter miles, so let’s see…
