De Marchi L’Eroica 2013
October 2013
De Marchi are one of the partners of the 2013 L’Eroica event that caters for vintage bikes and to celebrate the association they have produced a special line of cycling clothing.
The L’Eroica takes place this weekend – October 5th and 6th – in Gaiole, close to Siena, covering the white roads of the Chianti region of Italy. Only ‘heroic’ bicycles, built before 1987, are permitted in the event. The L’Eroica ties in perfectly with De Marchi’s core values, as the combination of old style pioneering cycling, dirt roads and the steep hills encourage exertion in its purest form. As a partner of L’Eroica 2013 and will have all of their latest products on display in the event expo area, but also some older looking kit in the shape of their new Authentic and Tradition collections.
More than 5000 people from all over the world compete in L’Eroica every year, seeking the joy of pure ‘vintage’ cycling, with spare tub or inner tube strapped across their chests, riding on thin tubed steel bikes, and unashamed to have to get off and push if the going gets too steep…
To match the enthusiasm for classic cycling that the L’Eroica creates, De Marchi have produced a specific range of kit – the Authentic and Tradition collections.
Authentic is the ‘replica’ collection with replica historic jerseys like those made by Maglificio De Marchi for great champions and national teams. These vintage replica jerseys are designed to be authentic down to the smallest detail and feature brands like Atala, Scic, Wilier Triestina, Salvarani, Mainetti, Filotex. New for 2013 they have added the Bottecchia jersey of Bobet (1951) and the ‘Swiss Pack’ jerseys of Kubler and Koblet. There’s also vintage cotton hats, a classic Musette and leather gloves to finish off your yesteryear ensemble.
A great film about L’Eroica was made in 2010. It gives you a good feel for the event.

[…] These kind of rides are where a ‘cross bike can shine outside the usual hour of racing. With the ability to connect trails by using the road, or to avoid roads by cutting across country, a cyclo-cross bike can make you look at your local rides in a whole different way. Routes you would previously have avoided suddenly become accessible; even flooded, muddy back roads are no longer off-limits. Come the summer, when those trails have dried out, the feel will be completely different, especially down here on our chalky South Down’s trails, which will start to take on the look of the recent Strade Bianche or L’Eroica!
