Shimano Ultegra 11-speed
Again mimicking Dura-Ace, Ultegra brakes have 10% more braking power than 6700, thanks to a new symmetrical dual pivot design and a new brake shoe compound. The extra brake power results in enhanced control, especially from the ‘on the hoods’ position and modulation is improved by using new polymer-coated cables. The Ultegra brakes are also available in a direct mount version for aerodynamics.
Shimano have designed Ultegra 6800 to have a ‘rider tuned drivetrain’. In the real world this means that one chainset can carry a wide variety of chainrings and a wide variety of cassette options are available for all kinds of riding, whether it be racing, sportives or cyclocross. The Ultegra cassette is of course 11-speed and is available from 11-23T to 11-32T. The Ultegra 6800 crank shares the same 4 arm design as Dura-Ace, apparently providing better power transfer for reduced overall weight, and is available in 53x39T, 52x36T, 50x34T and 46x36T. It looks fantastic and the gearing options means that there’s something for everyone.
The chain has a new surface technology called SIL-TEC, which is an advanced low friction surface plating technology designed to increase performance, running smoother whilst being more durable.
To go with your Ultegra groupset there’s a new tubular, clincher or tubeless, 11-speed Ultegra wheel, called WH-6800. It has a wide flange hub, plus an offset rim for rigidity and power transmission, and uses Shimano’s tried and tested cup and cone bearings for durability.
We have yet to ride Shimano Ultegra 6800 but if it rides anywhere near as good as it looks then you have to ask yourself, why spend double on Dura-Ace? Why not put the money saved towards some really trick wheels? Certainly the riders we know using Ultegra 6700 this season weren’t held back at all… Look out for a full review soon.
