A preview of the G.Tornado shoe from Gaerne.

“Whoever wears my shoes, should be proud every day as the Gaerne name stands for quality without compromise”. It wasn’t until I read that quote by Gaerne’s founder, Ernesto Gazzolo, that I finally realised where the name Gaerne came from. I’d worn Gaerne shoes back in the 90s and often wondered about that. So this preview of the G.Tornado shoes has at least answered that question!

My previous Gaernes were an exuberant bright blue and yellow, with laces and a large flap, very modern. The pair of G.Tornado shoes I’ll be trying have come in a more sober, goes-with-everything-black. There are a few fluoro details to break up the black, but you can choose from orange, yellow or white; I really liked the orange.

Unusually the G.Tornados come with two different types of sole to choose from. There is a Garene EPS Light Weight full carbon sole and an EPS Carbon Power sole. I have the latter on my shoe, this uses a mixture of nylon and carbon fibres in it’s construction. It has standard Look type drillings and non-slip rubber inserts for walking.

The upper is made from a laser perforated soft microfiber material, with mesh inserts to keep things cool. A single BOA L6 reel sits at the top of the shoe and the tongue has a small Velcro tab to help keep it in place.

The heel cup is injection moulded and shaped with a grippy inner surface to keep your heel in place. It’s also designed to not deform or weaken over time. The inner sole is apparently ultra-lightweight, breathable and replaceable.

Gaerne says the G.Tornado shoes are “functional and rich in technical content”. I’ll be trying them out over the summer and will let you know how I get on with them
