A preview of the Sufferfest App.

If you’ve contemplated indoor cycling you may have heard of Sufferfest. If you’ve actually cycled in the comfort of your own home/garage/shed then you’ll understand how David McQuillan came up with the idea.

Thanks to the increasing amount of competition, the minions at Sufferfest have had to up their game. The Sufferfest is now an app that contains the full library of Sufferfest videos and can link to your sensors, power meters and smart trainers (or give you estimated power for your non-smart trainer) to give you more detailed instructions than just the ‘perceived effort level’ that you might have seen on the original videos.

The Sufferfest is in fact quite a bit more than just cobbled together race footage with instructions on screen to help you follow the designed workout. In partnership with Apex Coaching’s Neal Henderson, Sufferfest have put together a good selection of detailed training plans which are free with your subscription, as is access to a library of workout videos. This can be taken further by contacting Apex to have the training plans customised to you. You’d be in good company because Neal has coached Rohan Dennis, Evelyn Stevens and Flora Duffey as well as being on the coaching team for the US National Team and BMC Pro Cycling.

Recently a collaboration with Yoga 15’s Abi Carver has seen an addition of yoga videos to the app. These videos, as well as some ‘not on video’ exercises are used to compliment the Sufferfest videos as part of the comprehensive training plans.

I rediscovered the Sufferfest videos after Lea Valley opened an indoor training centre that uses them. This week Sufferfest announced the schedule for their annual ‘Tour of Sufferlandria’ which has been running since 2013. The Tour takes place from 4th February this year and to finish it you need to finish 9 days straight of Sufferfest videos. There’s a bit more to it than that and there are prizes and massive kudos to be won, details are here.

I’ve been given 2 months to test the app and Embrace The Suffer, so it’d be rude not to at least sign up and give it a go. Although I’m pretty sure I’m not quite fit enough right now to even consider the Quest for Knighthood which involves doing ten videos back to back! I’ll let you know how I get on with the app in general and with the ToS 2017 too. It’s a good excuse to get on the bike and get rid of all the Christmas excess. Why don’t you register and join me? Tell me how you get on. Until then IWBMATTKYT
