I’m not sure you could have failed to have noticed the rise and rise of the young Columbian Mr Nairo Quintana at this years Tour de France – 2nd on the Podium in Paris; winner of the White Jersey ‘Youth’ classification and the Polka Dot Jersey ‘King of the Mountains’ classification AND taking the win on Stage 20, the mountain top finish in Semnoz – on his head, and indeed adorned by the rest of the Movistar pro-cycling team is the new Catlike Mixino helmet.

I’m a cat person; I’m fond of dogs too, but cats have independence innate in their persona that appeals more than the slobbering neediness of a hound. That’s apropos of nothing really, just a clumsy segue into talking about Catlike the brand.

From Humble beginnings in 1996 from the back room of a bike shop Catlike have built a brand that now commands a distribution network in 5 continents, with distributors in more than 45 countries.

The Catlike people say – ‘The new Mixino is the latest evolution of Catlike design philosophy. It is a lightweight helmet that improves safety by the use of an Aramid roll cage which provides high impact protection. A micro-dial adjust the thin arms that wrap around the inside of the helmet, and two rear supports are independently adjustable. With vertical adjustment and new lateral wings to which different thickness pads can be attached. This is a helmet that will fit nearly every head shape and allowing you to customize your comfort’.

I have received a medium, in white, through the door this week from the nice people at i-ride, exclusive UK distributors of Catlike Helmets, and I shall be putting this helmet to the test. Hopefully not a full test, as I would hope to be able to stay on my bike, but if that blurb above is anything to go by then I am quietly confident that it will help prevent any ghastly injury associated with a bump on the head… an Amarid roll cage you say?

It’s a nice looking helmet that’s for sure, and even if I do say so myself it looks pretty good comfortably perched on my head but more on that later in the full review.

In the meantime, whilst you’re patiently waiting for my full review, have a look at what the man Alex Dowsett has to say about the Catlike Mixino Helmet (bear in mind he’s paid to wear the helmet though, eh?):
