Vincenzo Nibali’s Specialized Tarmac SL4

May 2013

Baring a major incident and despite the atrocious weather, it looks as though Italian Vincenzo Nibali of Astana will win the 2013 Giro and here’s a video of his Specialized Tarmac SL4 being built up by Astana mechanics.

We love seeing pro mechanics at work. Its great for getting little tips to improve your own bike building and maintenance skills – it’s just a shame we don’t all have access to a pro team’s service course!

This is the same bike that Niballi has used on the road and also on the mountain TT stage, which he won emphatically. Inspiration for the Sicilian’s S-Works Tarmac SL4 comes from the region of his birthplace, the Strait of Messina, and the frameset is adorned with a shark, representing his nickname “Shark of the Strait”. The blue paint represents the beauty of the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas.

Nibali has been superb in this year’s Giro, seeing off all the pretenders to the crown. Although we haven’t seen the showdown with Wiggins we hoped for here, there’s still been plenty of great riding but the reality is that no one has ever looked likely to threaten his overall lead.
