There was a time when Shimano Dura-Ace was a name only associated with hubs, not complete wheels. When you wanted a new pair of race wheels you’d buy a set of Shimano’s top hubs and have them laced to, more often than not, some Mavic rims.

 

And it was Mavic who changed all that by starting the ‘Factory Built Wheels’ phenomenon with the likes of the Helium and then the very successful Ksyrium wheelsets.

 

Of course, with the possibility of their hub sales then under threat, it didn’t take Shimano long to respond and get in on the act. You can still buy hubs as part of a groupset but it’s telling that most groupsets are sold minus hubs nowadays; Shimano did the right thing getting into building complete wheelsets.
