Summer cyclocross seems to be gaining in popularity and at the recent Orbital Cycling Festival we had a chance to inspect the Whyte Saxon Cross Team – Whyte’s first purpose built ‘cross race bike. Mention Whyte Bikes and most people will know them for their fine mountain bike offerings. However, they are starting to spread their wings and the range now includes flat and drop bar road bikes and two Saxon Cross models.

 

The Whyte Saxon Cross Team CX bike has a 6061 aluminium frame and Easton’s straight bladed EC90 XD carbon fork. Easton also supply the ‘cross specific, disc braked wheelset in the form of their EA90 XD wheels, which have a slightly wider rim to handle wider cross tyres and aid use at lower pressures. Whyte have specced this Saxon Cross Team CX with SRAM’s Red22 groupset. Production models will have Red hydraulic shift levers mated to Force mechanicals. SRAM Red 22’s tall brake levers are difficult to miss and let everyone know what you’ve got going on.
